Off-Campus Housing

There is a long tradition of undergraduate students living off-campus at the University of Rhode Island. For decades, students have fondly referred to the off-campus experience at URI as “living down-the-line”. Each year nearly 50% of all sophomores and 75% of all juniors and seniors choose to live in off-campus housing. South County Rhode Island, where URI is located, is a summer resort community that supports a safe, vibrant and collegial environment for URI students who live off-campus. Living off-campus offers students a bit more independence and requires a bit more resourcefulness than living on campus. However, history has shown that living off-campus is a valuable learning experience that complements the academic learning experience of these students.

South County is comprised of several communities and towns including, Kingston, Narragansett, Wakefield, Peacedale, Point Judith, Saunderstown and Charlestown. Within these areas there are apartments available for one or two students, as well as entire houses available for larger groups of students. Generally, the cost of living off-campus is comparable to the cost of living on-campus. However the cost structure of rental properties can vary (e.g. type of heat and utilities), so it is important to take into account all costs before making a commitment to a realtor or to prospective roommates. While many students who live off-campus own their own vehicles many others car-pool with roommates or neighbors, or use public transportation.

The University of Rhode Island provides an off-campus housing listing through the Commuter Student Housing office.  The Commuter Housing staff help students and their family members identify specific rental properties as well as realtors who specialize in renting or leasing properties to URI students.

Fraternities and Sororities

There are several fraternities and sororities at the University of Rhode Island. These residencies serve as housing to approximately 9% of the URI on-campus population. The Greek program at URI is an important part of the campus community. While the vast majority of students who live in these residences are members of that particular fraternity or sorority, requests by non-members to live in these houses are honored on a space available basis. For more information on living in either a fraternity or a sorority contact the Fraternity Managers Association or visit http://www.uri.edu/student_affairs/greek/index.hml
