The University of Rhode Island offers several on-campus living options. Most First Year students reside in “freshman focused” traditional residence halls, some of which include Living and Learning Communities. Upper class students generally reside in four room suites in the Roger Williams Complex, single bedrooms in the Hope Quad residences, suite style units in Eddy Hall, apartment units in Garrahy, Wiley, and the Terrace Apartments, or various theme houses including the Health Sciences House, the CELS House, Rainbow Diversity House, Women's Leadership House, and the International Engineering Program (IEP) House. Additionally, some URI students elect to participate in Greek life and reside in on-campus fraternity and sorority houses as chapter members or as a boarder within those communities. Undergraduate students living in non-apartment style residence halls (including suites) are required to have a resident meal plan for the academic year. Meal plan options for students living in theme and Greek houses may vary. Undergraduates living in on-campus apartments (units with kitchens) are not required to carry a standard resident meal plan but may elect to carry a supplemental meal option (see Dining Services web site for more information on URI meal plans). Students living in traditional and suite style residence halls are required to vacate their rooms during the University’s recess periods (Thanksgiving Break, Winter Intersession, Spring Break).

General building style descriptions are provided in this section as a guide for your review of the various on-campus living options. Please contact Housing and Residential Life staff with any additional questions regarding on-campus living options at URI.

Traditional Residence Halls: Large and Small Corridor Style

URI students enjoy the sociability of co-ed corridor style traditional residence halls where they meet many other students and feel a part of the University community. Large and small corridor style residence halls have rooms that open onto a common hallway with one or two common bathrooms for each hallway. Housing and Residential Life custodial staff service these common bathrooms on a routine basis. Most of these residence halls have laundry rooms, lounges, television rooms, and designated study areas. The large corridor residence halls–Adams, Barlow, Bressler, Browning, Butterfield and Weldin - are freshman focused facilities within the residential neighborhood known as the South End. The small corridor residence halls–Hutchinson, Merrow, Peck, and Tucker–are known as the Hope Quad, and are just west of the Library and clustered around the Hope Dining Commons.

Traditional Residence Halls: Two-Room Suite Style

Our two-room suite style residence halls–Heathman, Fayerweather, and Gorham–consist of two bedrooms with a semi-private bathroom between them. Each two-room suite opens onto a co-ed corridor community of about 16 rooms. This arrangement offers a nice balance between the close interaction of the four, five, and ten-room suites and the active community environment of the traditional corridor style residence halls. Support staff offices, study rooms, lounges, laundry rooms, and other special-use rooms for two-room suite style halls are located in the center core “pods” or in the lower levels. Students living in two-room suites are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms.

Upper Class Suites: Four-Room Suite Style Halls

The Roger Williams Complex residential neighborhood consists of buildings with three, four, or five living towers connected by a common ground floor. The four-room suite-style halls are Aldrich, Burnside, Coddington, Dorr, Ellery, and Hopkins. One student room in each cluster on the upper floors has sliding doors opening onto a small balcony. Each floor has one or two clusters of four rooms that open onto a common hallway and share two semi-private bathrooms. Bathrooms are shared and cleaned by those living in the cluster/suite. Each four-room suite style hall has a laundry room, a large lounge on the first floor, and a designated study area. Students living in the RW Complex enjoy close interaction with students living in the same cluster and are within easy walking distance to both the athletic/recreation facilities and the Hope Dining Commons.

Upper Class Singles: Small Corridor Style Halls

The small corridor residence halls–Hutchinson, Merrow, Peck, and Tucker–are known as the Hope Quad, and are just west of the Library and clustered around the Hope Dining Commons. These Hope Quad residence halls possess several single rooms along with their standard complement of standard double rooms. Hope Quad double rooms are assigned to first year students. Hope Quad singles are offerred to upper class students.

Upper Class Suites: Eddy Hall

Eddy Hall, opened in 2007, is a 300 bed upper class designated residence hall consisting of 4, 5, and 10 person suites. Four person suites consist of two double occupancy rooms, living room, and two bathrooms. Five person suites consist of five single occupancy rooms, living room, and two bathrooms. Ten person suites consist of ten single occupancy rooms, living room, and three bathrooms. Students living in Eddy Hall suites are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms. Eddy Hall has a large atrium main lounge, an atrium spanning “bridge lounge”, two seminar/group study rooms, a catering kitchen, and a laundry room in addition to staff support space.

Upper Class Theme Houses: Garrahy and Wiley Halls

Garrahy and Wiley residence halls each contain upper class living and learning communities dedicated to students with a particular interest area. Currently 30 beds in the Wiley Hall theme wing are assigned to upper class students associated with the health sciences: primarily Kinesiology, Nutrition and Food Sciences, Pharmacy, and Nursing majors. The 40 bed Garrahy Hall theme wing is assigned to College of the Environment and Life Sciences(CELS) majors committed to advancing environmental sustainability and “green” practices. Students living in Garrahy and Wiley theme house suites are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms. Additionally, approximately 40 upper class Honors Program students are selected for clustered theme housing in Garrahy Hall apartments. Students interested in residing in these theme communities submit their applications to their respective academic departments for review and advocacy during each spring semester.

Upper Class Apartments: Terrace and Gateway Apartments

The Terrace and Gateway Apartments are on-campus studio and one, two and three bedroom apartments located just south of the Memorial Union and at the main entrance to campus, and are available to upper class students only. These apartments include full kitchens and, as such, residents of the Terrace and Gateway Apartments are not required to carry a standard resident meal plan and may occupy their apartments during the campus recess periods. Students living in apartments are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms.

Upper Class Apartments: Garrahy and Wiley Halls

Opened in 2006/07, Garrahy and Wiley halls contain 4 and 5 person apartment units arranged around a center building atrium and “grand lounge”. Each apartment unit consists of single bedrooms, a living room, two bathrooms, and a kitchen/dining area. Since these living units include full kitchens, residents of Garrahy and Wiley hall apartments are not required to carry a standard resident meal plan and may occupy their apartments during campus recess periods. Students living in apartments are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms.
